In October, the library's general information system switched to new software. Now registered users worldwide, including deployed users, can borrow books through GLIS.

Currently, 67 MVR libraries have switched to the new system. By the end of 2012, all 85 main libraries and branch libraries will work according to the new system.

GLIS software allows users to write reviews, ratings, search titles and update materials. Registered GLIS users can search their library catalog, view their account, search for information from many data sources, ask librarians for help finding information, download audiobooks to iPods and MP3 players, and read magazines and e-books, all online.
The GLIS catalog also includes enhanced library catalog information – to include book cover images, book reviews, tables of contents and bestseller lists. Soldiers deployed with GLIS have access to many of the same libraries and information services they would receive through their installation library.
The challenge for the FMVRC library program is to provide easily accessible and user-friendly services given the logistics of a constantly mobile population, the complexities of global locations and multiple languages, and wartime security considerations.
"We decided to use the military ID as a library card and use email for communication so Soldiers can use any MVR library whether deployed, TDI or remotely deployed," said FMVRC Librarian Carla Helper.

"Soldiers still have to contact us to change their deployed service orders, but then the power is in their own hands." The ability to research and request materials privately is a great innovation," says Ami Drier, German online and systems librarian.
Soon, librarians will also be able to search their library catalog and make inquiries via smartphone.
But GLIS is not just a catalog of materials available in libraries. It also links to more than 13,000 full-text journals, e-books, college guides, and career information resources.
These resources include practice tests for college entrance exams, practice tests for military service, auto repair manuals, and products tailored to school curricula.

"Soldiers, their families and the civilians who support them need to feel like they're not isolated and in a completely different environment," Dreyer said.
"We offer as many different services as possible to make them feel at home." While our mission is to support the troops, we often find ourselves supporting them by providing a 'normal' atmosphere for their families,” he continued.
Jackie Stafford, librarian at FMVR Korea, believes that standardization of the new system will bring additional benefits.
"Any kind of knowledge is helpful when traveling to a new location. "When a soldier leaves a base that uses Millennium, they can be confident that they know how to use the same library system on a new assignment," Stafford said.

Materials taken from the Yongsan Library in Seoul can be returned to Fort Belvoir, Virginia. A soldier planning to deploy to Iraq from Patrick Henry Village in Heidelberg can set up an account to request a book through GLIS, send it to the range deployment location, and return it for rental.
Materials destined for Afghanistan or Iraq are usually forwarded free of charge from the FMVR library in Europe via the Soldier Postal Service.
Thus, the struggle of a soldier or civilian stationed in Mizan District, Zabul Province, Afghanistan, to gain knowledge or simply to escape the rigors of battle for a few hours of rest and relaxation with a good book has become easier.
